Broomstick Toss Craft and Game for Kids for Fall Parties

You are busy working in the kitchen; your kids need something to do. Take a minute to turn some plates and a broom into a fun Thanksgiving Activity. This Broomstick Toss game is perfect for preschoolers and family parties. Bring on the holiday fun! Enjoy.

Jake is happy he got to use scissors, nevermind he did not follow the instructions. Let your kids experiment. Give them a plain piece of paper and a pair of kiddie scissors, and you've just earned twenty minutes of freedom. Cut the center from your mini-paper plate. Grab your broom. Dessert Plates work best.

Easy Thanksgiving activity game for kids to make and play.

Thanksgiving Game for Parties  

You will need:

6 -10 paper plates, scissors, and a broom.

• Start by poking a hole in the center of your plate and cutting around to form a ring.
• Repeat with all plates.
• Divide into two teams, each team taking half the plates to opposite ends of the room.
• Get your broom, decide which team goes first.
• Unlike the traditional ring toss the player holds the broom and actively tries to catch the rings. It can be a boisterously fun game for preschoolers.
• We found when you toss your plate upside down it flies better, but it is nearly impossible to catch on the broom. So, toss your plates under-handed with the eating side up.
• When a player tosses all of their plates, tally the 'ringers' and switch sides.

The winner catches the most plates with the broom.

Action!....

The kids really like this game and it is so SIMPLE.  It is a great 'busy' activity while you cook Thanksgiving Dinner. They needed very little moderation, although I can see the broomstick turning into a weapon quickly in a dispute, so don't leave them unattended for too long. :-)

Got a box? Got an hour? Make a homemade costume for creative play, trick or treating, or a fun spontaneous parade. We saw an episode of Phineas and Ferb and Candace was wearing a Perry Costume. We had to make our own Perry the Playtpus Homemade Costume for Halloween. Enjoy!

So, I was surfing Facebook and caught this photo of Candace dressed in a Perry the Platypus costume, and I immediately knew I'd be recreating it for the blog. What a great idea for creative play- Box recycling. I mean, who doesn't love a box?

Who indeed? Of course, the family cat loves a box.

First, I grabbed an old box. Then, I tried to match Perry's teal color with paint I had on hand. I got a drab teal by mixing blue + white + a dash of red.

 

I didn't want to go to the store. It was hurricane weather- even Indiana was cold and windy. So, I searched my stash of junk and found old paper plates, squished turquoise crepe paper garland, Styrofoam circles, and lucky me an old, beige fedora!

Start by taping an end to the back, and then line glue all around 
and attach the crepe paper.

Paint your beak orange.

Paint a mouth on one side.

Attach paper plate beak to inside with tape.

Cut out paper eyeball and wrap crepe over for eyebrows.

Finally...

• Insert kid as Candace. 
• Find Phineas and Ferb Friends. 

This took a couple of hours. Of course, you can always save time or effort and choose to buy costumes from fancy costume shops online such as kigurumi.co. but I loved that we had everything on hand and could recycle my craft supplies. Full Disclosure: I ran out of crepe, so I made sure to cover the front and let the sides go with just paint.

Creative Imaginative Play and Dress up Leads to Self-Esteem

We attended a practice party for the race pit crew of Rex Norris. It was a special event, so it called for a special attire. Mandy Mayhem styled herself in sparkly, pink slip-ons, black leggings with silver glittery sparkle, a turquoise tee with silver and rhinestone buttons, and her Snow White costume from last year. Enjoy!

Upon, slipping the costume over her clothes she noted it had shrunk. This ability will become very useful later if she goes through a chubby stage. Remember, it is the dryer ~ not you. It always helps with self-esteem if you can blame someone else.

Her special accessory is a giraffe, perhaps Geoffrey from Toys R Us. She entertained anyone who cared to watch with a puppet show on the deck.

Mayhem is always allowed to dress herself no matter where we go. If the occasion requires specific attire; I give her choices. She is excellent at matching and pretty good at choosing the right outfit.

I never find her clothes embarrassing. I would be embarrassed if they were dirty or too mature for her age because that reflects on me, but fun, self-expression is healthy and makes for great self-esteem. "I can do it!" Allow your child to be themselves- your relationship will appreciate it.

This is a fun game we learned at VBS a few years ago and it is loads of fun to play! It’s like a live action game of ‘Paper, Rock, Scissors’. These games are great for Summer Camp or Family Reunions.

What you Need: 
A Large Yard or Field, 3 Ropes (or Other Items) to be used as Place Markers

How to Play Game: 

Character Descriptions and Actions:

Monsters: Beat Elves. Action: Show that you are a monster by raising your arms high over your head and ‘roaring’ at the opposing team.

Wizards: Beat Monsters. Action: Show that you are wizard by pretending to shoot magic from your finger tips at the opposing team, while making a loud ‘zapping’ sound.

Elves: Beat Wizards. Action: Show that you are an elf by sticking out your tongue and wiggling your fingers by your ears (as if mocking the other team) and make a silly sound at your opponents.

Split the players into two even teams and designate one additional person as the referee. Choose a place to play and mark a center line and a boundary line at the end of each side. 

(Creating a long playing area – from left to right it will be (far left) boundary line, center line, (far right) boundary line.) 

Each team huddles together at their own boundary line and decides which character they will be (as a team) at the beginning of each round. 

(Character descriptions and actions listed above.) Once the teams have decided, the ref calls them to the center line and calls out “1, 2, 3, Go!”. 

Then the teams will do the action for the character they chose. If their character beats the opposing teams character, they will chase them back to their boundary line, tagging as many players as they can and bringing those players to their team. 

Play continues until one team captures all of the players from the other team.

No matter how much we would like to, most parents just aren't able to throw that ultra-expensive birthday party for kids every year, but that doesn’t mean your BIRTHDAY still can't be fun! Here is a great, cheap birthday game activity. You can switch up the theme. We went with Gummi Candy Worms, but you can use Gummy Bears too. Enjoy, this worm birthday game for kids!

Fun Paper Plates
Canned Whipped Cream
Albanese Gummi Worms or other small Gummy Candies

Easy Kid's Game for Birthday Party: Worm Party Game.

How to Play Worm Birthday Game: 

• You can play one at a time or all at once as a race- we have done both.
• Place the same amount of objects on a paper plate for each participant. (10 kids = 10 plates)
• Cover the items completely with whipped cream. (Try to make each plate exactly the same.)
• Each player gets a whipped cream-covered plate and an empty plate.
• Hands are placed behind your back and on "Go," players use only mouths to find items on plate, one at a time, and spit them onto empty plate.
• The first player to find them all wins!
• (If playing one at a time, the person with the quickest time wins.)

This is a great game for Summer Camp too.

DIY: Make a Doctor Costume for Halloween

Kids love to play dress up, here's a fun idea for a doctor Halloween costume. Or make it a nurse, a prince, a vampire, or a kitty...

Every free Friday in the summertime, you'll find me at yard sales on a quest for the perfect costumes. My mouth waters when I see outgrown, handmade Halloween costumes. I love it when I stumble upon an old football jersey or prom dress.

On the first week of November, I'm hitting clearance sales at Wal-mart and the party stores, looking for a great deal on a shiny, new costume to fill my trunk.

Kids love to dig through the trunk and try-on the clothes, transporting themselves into a fairy-tale world full of fun. I lug the trunk to drama clubs, preschool classes, and summer camps.

Anything can be a costume. A fuzzy, red towel hemmed at the end with a shiny, gold ribbon makes a robe fit for a King. An old, prom dress is the prefect princess dress.

I scour thrift stores for fun new finds. My kids love to dress like Daddy.  He wears navy pants and a periwinkle shirt as a mechanic. Occasionally he throws on a pair of overalls. Once, at a Salvation Army, I found a denim, Sean John jumpsuit. SCORE. My son was thrilled!  He tossed it over his navy dress pants and blue shirt and we headed to the shop to help Daddy at work.

Dress up is a fantastic activity to teach creativity and learn through role playing.  We've got some scrubs that make a great role-playing costume but they aren't so good for playing a doctor or surgeon in a production for the local retirement home.  It's cute watching the little one with their pants pulled up to their eyeballs and trying not to trip over the dress length shirt, but can we take him seriously as an actor?

A kid-size pair of soft, cotton scrubs makes the perfect costume for your little up and coming Oscar winner or the perfect gift for kiddos whose parents have careers in medicine.

What is important in an easy, cute recycled costume?

1.  Ease of construction.
2.  Crafty Cleverness.
3.  Cuteness Factor.
4.  Comfort
5.  Frugality

Simple, cheap costumes rent for $50 and sell for about $90.  We made this costume from an over-sized, stuffed bunny.

We took a creative trip to Goodwill, found some bunny p.j.s and a giant, floppy, stuffed bunny for $1.99.

Sadly, we cut off all of her appendages, removed the stuffing, cut out eye holes, then re-attached her eyes.

The ears are stuffed with a metal clothes hanger. My daughter loved wearing the stuffy's fuzzy feet and paws. I added a simple, black half-face mask for the interior structure.

NO SEW - just tacky glue.

The stuffy's main body/belly became a tunic to hide the wearer's neck. We'd planned to attach it to the back to cover hair, but later decided she looked like a cute girl bunny with her hair spilling out. The stuffy's tail is hot-glued to the back of the p.j.s. Get Hoppin'!
