Seasonal Books for Kindergarten 2015

Winter Holiday Books for Preschoolers and Kindergartners

The weather is getting colder. Children are dreaming of snow and the holiday season, and teachers and caregivers are looking for fun, new books to share with their students. These 2015 seasonal books are great for preschoolers and Kindergarten too. Enjoy!

We were given three adorable children's books for review, and they are perfect seasonal books for your little ones. One focuses on the joys of snow, one talks about Yetis, and the other focuses on Hanukkah... and Santa.

The Thing About Yetis Book for Preschooler with Companion Craft
The Thing About Yetis is a perfect book for preschoolers.

The Thing About Yetis is Vin Vogel's debut book as author/illustrator. It is an adorable book about a fuzzy Yeti. What's a Yeti to do? Like children, Yetis get bored in the winter months.

If you have cabin fever, you'll need something to do to. After you read the story, grab some paper, markers, and cottonballs and make your own Yeti as a companion book project. Just grab some tracing paper and trace the picture on the book cover or let the kids freehand it.

What's that you say? You don't have a book to trace? Well, you can get one at the library or buy one on Amazon: The Thing About Yetis*, or (if you are a resident of the U.S.) leave a comment to win your very own copy!

Winter Holiday Books for Preschoolers and Kindergartners
Dear Santa, Love Rachel Rosenstein is a cute book to teach about holiday traditions.

Dear Santa, Love Rachel Rosenstein is written by the actress, Amanda Peet and her friend, Andrea Troyer, with illustrations by Christine Davenier. This is a Santa story with a twist. Rachel Rosenstein's family doesn't celebrate Christmas

Published by Double Day, this picture book is full of vibrant illustrations that small children will love. It is cute, funny, and it describes some Jewish traditions. However, be prepared to explain why Santa doesn't visit all children- that can be a tricky subject.

If you want to have a multi-cultural discussion with companion craft activities this book is a great launching point. Little Rachel runs into some friends who also don't celebrate Christmas. They celebrate Diwali and Chinese New Year.

Chicken Nugget Ghosts Recipe

How to Make Chicken Nugget Ghosts

We've discovered lots of fun things to do with chicken nuggets for Halloween and beyond. When Tyson® and Sam's Club asked us to share a Chicken Nugget Recipe, we we're happy to oblige. These Chicken Nugget Ghosts are easy to make, and they taste delicous. Enjoy!

Chicken Nugget Ghosts Recipe
Aren't these little chicken nugget ghosts bootiful?

When I was a kid, the classic Peanuts cartoons meant family time. My mom would make cinnamon rolls, and we'd gather around the television. I wanted to have a similar tradition with my kids- something simple and delicious that the whole family loves. So, we decide on Tyson® Nuggets and Crispy Strips as we anxiously await the new Peanuts Movie!

What better way to watch your favorite Halloween special than with some cute, trick or treating chicken nuggets.

Tyson® Chicken is made with 100% all natural ingredients and fully cooked with 12-15 grams of protein. They make a great snack, finger food for kids, or even a go to meal for the whole family

First, you will need to stock up on supplies from Sam's Club. The kids love shopping there! They like all of the taste testing stations and being able to get their favorite foods in bulk.

Bake the nuggets in the oven according to package directions.Baked Nuggets are better than microwaved ones, though, they all taste good.

How to Make Chicken Nugget Ghosts Recipe

Now, dress your chicken nuggets up for Halloween! These cute, chicken nugget ghosts are easy to make too. Just cover your nugget with a slice of White American Cheese, using a straw- poke two holes for eyes and pop them in the Microwave oven for 15 seconds or less. When done, they look like the Peanuts in the classic holiday cartoon. The kids don't like Provolone Cheese, but it works too.

So, who is your favorite Peanuts character? Share with us in the comment section. You might say I am a bird lady- okay, a crazy bird lady. I currently have 6 chickens, 1 rooster, 1 drake, 1 duck, and a Cockatiel. Yep, Woodstock has always been my favorite!

What fun things do you do with chicken nuggets for Halloween? The kids love pasta and chicken nuggets, so we decided to combine the two into a pasta skeleton with a chicken nugget skull. Enjoy!

We played around with food to decide what food would make the best face and still taste good with the chicken nuggets. We settled on pickle faces. Nothing goes better with nuggets than ketchup and pickles- at least that's what the kids say.

6 Froggy Birthday Party Ideas for Book Lovers

Celebrate Froggy's Birthday with these 6 Fun Ideas

In honor of Jonathan London's newest Froggy book, which was released March 10, 2015, we're sharing 6 froggy birthday party ideas for book lovers. Feel free to share your own frog theme birthday ideas too. Enjoy!

Froggy's Birthday Wish by Jonathan London.

      Froggy's Birthday Wish
Froggy is celebrating a birthday. He gets lots of wonderful, exciting presents, but he isn't happy. He wants something else. Finally, Froggy's mother shows him her present. Now Froggy is happy!

This book is fun to read in a classroom setting for a birthday celebration. You might like this fun birthday cake craft to go along with the story.

Another fun birthday activity is to make your own Pinata from construction paper and a cardboard tube. Froggy had a moon pinata, but we're making a traditional donkey pinata. This mini pinata is perfect as a party favor or place setting decoration. Just fill with your favorite candy or treats.

How to make a donkey pinata party favor.
How to make a donkey pinata party favor.
You will need: construction paper, scissors, paste, 2 cardboard toilet roll tubes or 1 cardboard paper towel tube, and tape.

To make a donkey pinata birthday party favor:

Cut 1/2" strips of your favorite colors of construction paper. Use tape to attach to the base of the tube (torso) as seen in figure 1. Wrap until the cardboard tube is covered and tape to attach the end. Next, cut 1/4 of the other cardboard tube. This will be the head (see figure 2). Cut four 1/2" slits, 1/4" apart on one end of the head. This will allow you to connect the head to the end of the other tube. Leave the two center slits to attach the ears. With the leftover piece of the cardboard tube, cut two ears as shown in figure 3. Slide the ears into the center slits and then slide the outer slits onto the end of the other tube as shown in figure 4.

Next, wrap the head and ears just like the torso portion. Now, cut small strips and glue to cover the donkey until it looks like a real pinata as seen in figure 5. Cut two 2" wide strips of paper. Wrap one into a link, tape the ends, and stick into the head. This will be the nose. When complete, use construction paper to make a mouth. Use the other one on the other end- this will keep the candy in place. Finally, cut eyes out of construction paper and attach.

Congrats! You've made a mini pinata party favor. Breathe a sigh of relief... yep, it was harder than we thought it would be too, but if you are relaxing watching television you can knock several out in an hour. Practice makes perfect!

Froggy's Worst Play Date by Jonathan London.

      Froggy's Worst Play Date
Froggy wants to go out to play, but all of his friends are busy. Good news! Mom has set up a playdate with Frogelina. He has to watch the Frog Prince. At the movie, they eat popcorn and have a food fight! In the end, Frogelina steals a kiss from her froggy prince!

Have you ever tried this movie popcorn trick?

Do you know the trick to eating popcorn?
This little girl doesn't know the trick! At your next birthday party, amaze your friends with magic. Did you know movie popcorn will jump on your tongue? Yep, all you have to do is stick your tongue out over a bowl of popcorn and Voila! The popcorn attaches to your tongue! Try this with our homemade microwave popcorn.

Pour butter into paper popcorn bag and shake to mix. Add brown sugar and cinnamon, and shake bag again. Enjoy.

To celebrate the book, make a Frog Prince Puppet. Here's a similar frog puppet pattern and how to from DLTK. We used a mini paper plate and styled our puppet to look like Froggy! If you want, add a yellow crown to make a frog prince.
