Halloween Ideas: Diy Decorations

What makes the holidays so festive? The sparkle, the lights, and the fun decorations. Whether you purchase adorable skeleton decor like the ones here or make your own homemade Halloween decorations, once you decorate for the holiday season, you start to feel festive.

We found some creative ways to make homemade Halloween decoration lights that include a plastic cup holiday light ball designed for Christmas. Kudos to you if you have the patience to make it! We consider it, tried it, but... Let's just share the plan instead, okay? We were going to make it as instructed in the video but then paint it with orange spray paint and call it a pumpkin. No. Such. Luck.

It's the thought that counts though, right? These plastic cup homemade lights are just like my Grandma used to make. Use the technique of attaching the cups together to make a classroom door snowman or a classroom door pumpkin.

If you use mini medicine cups or recycle  K cups, you can make mini light balls. They also make great disco balls!

So, once we failed at that plan, we came up with a new plan. We experimented with tiny cups (the kind that come with medicine) and came up with a cool way to make holiday lights strings more fun.

Grab the kids and get crafting. These cups are easily colored with markers, permanent markers, and even glow-in-the-dark paint, or neon nail polish. Preschoolers will enjoy coloring the cups with markers or paint. Coloring with Sharpie markers will allow you to use the lights outdoors.

Once you're done decorating the cups, poke a small hole in the top to insert the lights. We tried a nail, a pencil, scissors, and an ink pen. Everything but the nail crushed the cups. The nail was not easy. So, we moved on to a very sharp kitchen knife. Just score a cross into the base of the cup while holding it upside down. Then, easily poke a hole in the center with the tip of the knife. Gently push the light into the hole. The colored cups give a festive glow.

At Oriental Trading, we also found burlap goody bags and birch tree place card holders. These make a perfect place setting for your holiday party guests while bringing a rustic, outdoorsy feel to the party.

Our DIY plastic cup light covers were inspired by an old, worn out set of orange plastic pumpkin light covers pictured below. They also inspired a paper bag pumpkin luminary. To make the face cut outs, fold the edges over and cut on the fold as you would when making a paper heart. Then, grab a dollar store battery powered votive to make an indoor luminary bag for Halloween.

Finally, we love this rustic twig Halloween pumpkin from Oriental Trading. It makes a fun lit centerpiece for an outdoor party and gives a sparkle of Halloween indoors.
