  • Mom & Son Journal
Finally, last on our list of thoughtful Christmas gift ideas is this journal book for boys. This book gift idea is a precious mother and son journal that's great for homeschoolers. It’s ideal for promoting discussion when conversation dries up, yet is intended to be lighthearted and fun. The book is perfect for young teens or preteens who aren’t always talkative or open and is a great way to bring them out of their shell. Older teens may find it it silly or embarrassing, so know the teen your shopping for before choosing this option.

Books for 11 - 14 year old Boys: The Last Kids on Earth

Books for Boys: 11 to 14 years

Are you looking for books that your preteen or teen boys will read and enjoy? Whether they are reluctant readers or love to read, once they've read all of the Harry Potter book series, it is difficult to find new books that will keep 11 to 14 year old boys engaged. No need to worry. We've found the cure! The Last Kids on Earth series by Max Brallier is just what you need. Enjoy!

Book Blurb: Life after the zombie apocalypse is pretty good for 13-year-old Jack Sullivan: he lives in a mind-clobberingly cool tree fort with his best friends, speeds through town playing Real-Life Mario Kart, has a crew of monster buddies, battles zombies on the regular, and generally treats life like it’s a videogame!
But then Jack’s friends make a startling discovery: they may not be the last kids on earth, after all. This is great news for everyone… except Jack. Once they’ve found other humans, his friends won’t stick around for long! Jack’s only hope for keeping things the way they are is to prove that everything here is perfect, life is crazy fun, and nothing else could be any better.

One problem: it’s hard convincing his friends that everything is great when they’re being hunted by a monstrous Nightmare King and an ancient evil who won’t rest until Earth has been devoured. Crud! Maybe life after the monster apocalypse is more complicated than Jack thought…

Books for 11 - 14 year old Boys: The Last Kids on Earth

Read our review about the first book in the series, The Last Kids on Earth book review. These books are page turners. Jake read this book in less than 24 hrs. When he read the first book from this series he said, "They better make this a series!" This time he says, "They better make this series a movie! I'd love to see it."

Per Jake: In this latest book, Jack is always fighting with himself. He knows they need to fix the radio, but he doesn't want to lose his friends. If they fix the radio, the other kids will go back to their families. He doesn't want that!

Adam Rubin Author Books

Books by Adam Rubin, Author

Who is Adam Rubin? He is an author who writes fun books for kids. You might remember his story, Those Darn Squirrels. With the release of his most recent children's book, Robo-Sauce, Mr. Rubin has quit his day job to become a full-time author. Jealous. His other jobs were pretty cool too. He once pitched interactive games, t.v. commercials, and brands. Now, he is just awesome sauce. Enjoy this review of his newest book releasing October 20, 2015.

Adam Rubin Author Books
Adam Rubin Author Books: Robo-Sauce.

Robo-Sauce is the perfect book for boys who don't like to read. Tweens and Teens alike will enjoy the flourescent orange graphics and lively illustrations by Daniel Salmieri. The book is interactive and takes a fun twist at the end.

You mustn't just read the story. You'll want to become a robot too. What's a squishy human boy to do? Create your own recipe for robo-sauce, of course. Robo-sauce will turn you into the exact robot you've dreamed of becoming, but Mr. Rubin's recipe ingredients are hard to find. Good luck, trying to make that sauce!

Eating Robo-Sauce preparing to turn into a robot.
Since, it is all about pretending, we've come up with the best robo-sauce recipe for kids who love to eat sweets. Just in time for Halloween too! So, grab your treat bucket with all that ooey-gooey candy and create a recipe that is sure to activate your robot resources.

Halloween Candy Leftover Robo-Sauce:

1 Pint of Vanilla Ice Cream or Yogurt
1 batch of M and M's or 1 batch of Halloween Candy Bars
1 batch of Smarties or Skittles Candies
1/2 C. Fruit
Chocolate or Caramel Syrup
1/2 C. Almond Milk
Plastic Sandwich Bags
Orange Food Coloring Gel

  • Remove ice cream from Fridge.
  • Unwrap your favorite candies and place in sealed plastic sandwich bag. To become a robot you need to show superior strength. You might want to pound the candy flat with your robo fists.
  • Get ice cream. Take a plastic butter knife and run it around the edge of the container to make it easier to pour or scoop out.
  • Pour or Place into a large bowl. Use a wooden spoon or plastic spatula to mush up the ice cream.
  • Stir in Almond Milk.
  • Add three-five drops of orange food coloring gel.
Yellow plus Red makes Orange.

Looking like Robo-Sauce.
  • Fold in (Add) Robo squishy candies

  • Stir gently with spoon or spatula.
Your Robo-Sauce is ready to eat and share with friends! Once you take the first bite- start moving like a robot. As you eat more of the cold sauce, notice how it feels when you eat it. Your body is getting colder- just like a metal robot. Now, walk and talk like a robot for the rest of the day.

Want to win your own copy of the book? Leave a comment by October 31, 2015. We'll choose one person to win!

Make a Call of Duty Black Ops Medal Afterschool Activity

Make your own Black Ops Call of Duty Style Medal

Call of Duty Black Ops and Ghosts are so popular with teens and their gaming Dads too. We've been posting  a ton of Call of Duty birthday party activity themes or after-school boredom busters. Enjoy!

I know, how can you get bored when you have your video games to play?

Well, sometimes you mess up and lose your tech time. Grounded. Don't leave your soldiers all alone. Remember when you used to get dressed up and play make believe? Yep. Now they call it role-playing, and it is cool to be a nerd.

Make your own Call of Duty Medal.

We made our look-alike (shh, I know it's a stretch, don't hurt my feelings!) medal with recycled cardboard from a cereal box, blue felt, aluminum foil, some Sharpies, and Tacky Glue.

Official Call of Duty Black Ops Prestige Medal.
Official Call of Duty Black Ops Prestige Medal.

How to Make a Call of Duty Medal

We took the image above, printed it out in black and white and then traced it to make a template. It's not an exact match, but it makes a fun Call of Duty activity for kids.

After, we cut out our images, we traced them onto the cardboard. There are 5 separate cardboard pieces making up the medal.

Next, we covered each piece with foil by wrapping the cardboard cut out and rubbing over it with fingers to reveal where to make the cuts. No need to glue the foil down, just wrap the edges so they fold over the back.

Then, we stacked each piece as pictured and glued them down with tacky glue.

Take a break, let it dry. Later, we took the Sharpie and colored the bottom layer. We used brown, but gold looks best. Then, we drew the features of the skull.

Finally, we cut the felt in an odd bow tie, folded it in half, glued it at the top, and then to the wings at the top of our cardboard medal.

If you make a Call of Duty template pattern stencil (see what I did there? That's weird, right?), and cut the pieces out prior to the party, it makes a quick, fun activity for a boys' birthday party.

Need a stencil pattern template - whatever you want to call it, you can find it here as a FREE PRINTABLE CALL OF DUTY pdf on our Mediafire page. If the link isn't clickable, I haven't scanned it in yet. Hold on. I'm getting to it.

Call of Duty Skull Mask.

How to make a Call of Duty Ghosts Wall Poster

This was a very easy and simple craft to make. We took one piece of black construction paper, folded it in half lengthwise and then drew half of the ghost skull. You'll note ours isn't perfect. The Call of Duty Ghosts logo is actually thinner than ours, but don't you just love individualism? That's what makes it a work of art.

Teens will enjoy making Call of Duty Ghosts art for their room.

After we cut out the skull mask, we used a glue stick to attach it to another sheet of black construction paper. Then, we colored it in with white chalk following the logo pictured below.

Then, we took a soft, black crayon (Roseart) outlined the skull, and added in skull fracture details. If you prefer a mask, cut it out at this step Leaving the only the eyes as open as holes.

Now, use a hole punch to make holes just under the eyes on each side. Grab a birthday party hat, remove the elastic band, tie knots into each hole, and voila! You have a Call of Duty Ghosts Mask.
