How to Make a Paper Turkey Craft with Scrapbook Paper

Scrapbook Paper Turkey Craft

Last year, we were given a few scrapbook paper books. These are amazing things to a crafter. Pages and pages of beautiful, colorful paper with awesome patterns and designs. We guarded it carefully until one day we saw, There's Just One Mommy, make a paper turkey craft. We knew right then, our paper treasure was destined to be a Thanksgiving turkey!  Enjoy.

This post contains affiliate links for your convenience.

My favorite part of creating is how everyone creates differently. I've known many an art teacher and several preschool teachers, who give you a pattern and instructions and get very upset if it isn't a carbon copy of their own.

Mommy cut a pattern. She showed her turkey (that she loves) and told the kids they could use any papers from the recycle bin, including the scrapbook paper. Check it out!

We took it further and used actual scrap paper from our recycle box.

Mayhem turned the tail feathers the opposite direction and used a mix of old cards, coloring pages, and pages from an Oriental Trading Co. flyer. Mommy's turkey head pattern was completely tossed aside for a simple circle.

Look what we did with just a simple sales flyer, you know, trash. We made it pretty.

Jake, Jake, Jake. He likes order. He turned the feathers the right way and made them all match. He didn't use Mommy's turkey head pattern, but he made his own head and body. Still no feet though.

How to Make a Rooster or Chicken Hat Band Mask or What She's Not Wearing Wednesday

Looking for an Easy Chicken Hat Tutorial?

Chickens: Rooster, Hen, Pullet, Cockerel or Cock. Whatever you call them, we're on a kick. Our baby chicks are six-weeks-old, and we adopted three duckling companions for them. We're still waiting to see if they turn out to be girls or boys. The waiting is the hardest part. Enjoy!

In the meantime, we are crafting chickens. We've made a chicken hat/ mask for the littles. It's an easy craft for preschool kids. Pair it with The Little Red Hen for a fun companion class lesson. Hopefully, they'll be happy to wear their new cap. You could even perform a little chicken play skit.

They don't want to wear a chicken hat.

Mayhem was not in the mood to wear a chicken hat. So, this post is what she's not wearing. Shh... I'll tell you what she is wearing. She marched upstairs and found a pair of hand-me-down khaki shorts which she paired with last year's favorite rainbow striped dress. This year, it is more like a polo shirt. Maybe she'll be back to her DIVA self next week. In the meantime, hope you enjoy crafting construction paper chicken or rooster hats with the kids.

Chicken hat for Little Red Hen play skit.
  • Cut two, two inch strips down the length of the construction paper.
  • Measure one strip band to child's head. Glue ends together.
  • Now fold the other strip in half to form the chicken's beak.
  • Bend in half until ends meet, glue together, and attach beak to hat band strip.
  • Cut out the comb and wattle as pictured
  • Paste wattle to beak, draw two black circles for nose holes. We cut out two paper "chicken combs" and glued to a piece of cardboard to make the comb stand tall.
  • Score a slit in each end of the comb and slide into hat band. Ta da!
You've got a preschool chicken costume in less than 15 minutes!

Here's an idea for a kid's flower hat band or did you ever wonder how to make a chef's hat for kids? Or maybe a Phineas Birthday Party Hat for kids...

Homeschool Folk Art Lesson: Paper Craft Quilt Squares (Jake's Journey)

Make a Chicken or Rooster quilt square pattern with construction paper

We are officially chicken farmers! So, in this edition of Jake's Journey in Art we incorporated our Silver Wyandotte Chicks into the homeschool art project

This paper craft is a pattern for an 8 x 8 quilt square. The assignment was to design a quilting pattern with shapes, colors, and a nice layout picturing a favorite activity. These squares depict egg collecting. You can cut simple shapes like these for your preschoolers or early elementary students and see what they create. Cartoon Chicken

When a bunch of people get together to make a quilt it is called a quilting bee. Quilts have been an important part of history. One of my favorite books is by Faith Ringgold, "Aunt Harriet's Underground Railroad in the Sky". The illustrations in the book are picture perfect for quilting. Quilts were sometimes used as welcome flags for runaway slaves. Many quilts depict important events.

Books about quilting.

So, finally getting chicks is a very important event in our family. Each of us chose a different color for the background and then coordinated the other background colors into our design. If the daddy had made one, we'd have a perfectly symmetrical mini paper quilt to hang on the wall. Since he didn't, we're going to put our quilt squares in frames and hang them vertically near our front door.

Jake's quilt square is pictured above. He loves our chicks, but he is not a fan of art. However, he sat down with us and happily arranged the pieces on his background. Mommy cut out all of the shapes before we got started. This helped to set Jake's mind at ease. Of course, as usual, he complained everyone else's project was much better than his. I quickly explained American Folk Art was done by regular people without any training or even skill in some cases. Even so, it is sought after today and often sold for thousands of dollars. Probably, because it depicts their heart and home.

I like how his chicken is laying a pile of eggs, it has two visible feet, and the basket is full of eggs. I love that he enjoyed making this project, and he was happy to know they'll be on display in our dining room.

Crafty First Grade Art Project: Make your own quilt square paper craft.
Mayhem got creative. She cut out a yolk, sunshine, brown eggs, and was the first to include hay in her basket. She even drew baby chicks inside the eggs (in case you couldn't recognize her efforts).

Making quilt squares with your kids is a fun way to discuss history, teach layout and design, and share a special moment in time. What's on your quilting square?

Vlog Tutorial Easy Preschool Torn Paper OWL Craft

Easy Fall Craft Activity for Kids Torn Paper Owl

We made a Vlog Tutorial with our Messy Play Class. This Torn Paper Owl Craft is an easy activity for preschoolers. The kids had a blast tearing their construction paper.  Enjoy!

Tearing the paper gives the activity a sensory play element. The glue is sticky and messy too. Make note if your child is especially upset with the sticky glue on their hands, they may have sensory issues.

Thanksgiving: Turkey and American Indian Craft Popsicle Sticks for Preschoolers

These Turkey and Native American Indian Stick Puppets are so simple and fun to make they are perfect for preschoolers.

We always have construction paper and popsicle sticks. So, for Thanksgiving, I grabbed a bag of craft feathers and we started creating. The plan was to make Wampanoag Indians to celebrate the first Thanksgiving in Plymouth. The feathers begged to become a turkey. Afterward, we pretended they were puppets and made a holiday play.

We made snowmen and reindeer too. Run to Joann's and buy a bag of fall-colored feathers. Use colored craft sticks or recycle Popsicle sticks. Tacky glue works great. Construction paper, mini-googly eyes, and the smallest pom poms ever!
