Apples, Apples, Apples! It's September and the best apples are ripening on the trees. Around here, the apples and pears are falling off attracting wasps and bees. I need to collect these gifts from nature and do a creative craft for kids like this first fun apple idea from It's Gravy Baby.

What could be better than than scent of fresh apple pie?  Why not try to add some sensory play to your play dough? It's Gravy Baby also offers up this apple pie scented play dough. She must have a lot of apples too!

I'm not really a Star Wars fan, but lots of people think I am. You want to know why? I'm a Sesame Street fan. I LOVE me some Sesame Street. My favorite character is Super Grover. This translates to a special appreciation for Yoda from Star Wars. I even named my favorite pet bunny after him. So, when I saw this green apple craft for kids depicting Yoda I was all, I've got to try that one. Wait, no, I mean, I have to DO that one! Check it our for yourself at Bit Rebels.

Activities for Toddlers: Sensory Messy Play with Foil, Shaving Cream, and Food Coloring

Toddlers Sight Word Sensory Activity

Whether your toddler loves to get messy or hates it, sensory play activities are essential to learning. When more than one sense is involved in learning, learning becomes easier. This Sight Word Sensory Activity with Shaving Cream and Foil is Messy, noisy, and fun for preschoolers. It also makes a great high chair activity for toddlers. Enjoy!

The little explorers love the sensation of feeling a new substance. They learn hand-eye coordination, fine motor skills, and the ability to deal with being messy through sensory play. This activity is great for young children two to six years old.

So, what senses are used?

• Hearing: The aluminum foil is noisy. Cream makes a swoosh when it comes out of the can.  Shake the sprinkles to the beat of your favorite song.
• Sight: Add lots of colors for eye candy or combine different colors of food coloring, and watch as they change into a new color.
• Taste: Use canned cream and sprinkles (see below).
• Touch: Aluminum is smooth and crinkly.  Shaving cream is cold and wet.  Dots are difficult to pick up.  Squish a little shaving cream on your fingers to make picking them up easier and more fun. 
• Smell: Shaving cream comes in lots of scents like spearmint, peppermint, or perfumes. Add scented oils or extract for more scentsations :)

One of my favorite things to use for sensory play is shaving cream. It comes in varying scents, it always feels cold, it is light, fluffy, and super fun!  For our last messy play class, we gave each child a large piece of aluminum foil, wrote the first initial of their name, squirted a few drops of food coloring in a blob of cream, and recycled paper from hole punches. 

Fun activity for toddler shaving cream on aluminum foil.  Messy, sensory play is a great tool to use to aid in sensory processing disorders. Starting a sensory play regimen early gives children the best chance for improvement.

What do you think happened?  It was quite surprising. No one messed up their letter.  They played and mixed the blob with food coloring, they picked up the dots and moved them around, but not one preschooler smooshed their letter!  

I demonstrated by decorating my letter with the pieces of paper and mixing in the colored shaving cream.  After this, they were still reluctant to ruin their letters, but eventually one or two began to decorate their letters.  Finally, everyone joined in making faces with the paper and swirling the cold cream around.

This is a great way to teach your toddler the alphabet.  Gently, take their finger and trace the letters.  Focus on a new letter each day.  Add an alphabet coloring sheet.

Tip:  For an EDIBLE option, use refrigerated, canned whip cream, food coloring, and candy sprinkles or colored sugar.

Recipes for Groundhog Day? That doesn't sound appetizing, but these are fun kid-friendly food crafts.

Groundhog Day, such a cute creature, but so few cute edible art and crafts out there. You've heard of Punxsutawney Phil? He's like a little teddy bear crossed with a beaver. He's so popular he has his own website with lesson plans for his special day. This is just one of our many marshmallow activities for kids. Enjoy!

I noticed most of the Groundhog Activities and Crafts out there look like tiny, adorable teddy bears. Groundhogs aren't so cute in real life. So, we focused on his true features. Note the tiny ears and big nose. I forgot to add his big teeth!

We used an upside down Snyder's Pretzel Chip, an old-fashioned oatmeal cookie, a small chocolate marshmallow, and holiday icing to glue it together. I stuck some green chips from the icing into the pretzel for eyes. IDK. Scroll down for the traditional teddy bear variety.

Attach cheese slices by making an eatable cream cheese paste on your Mayflower Sandwich Ship.

Fruit Snack Passengers = Madagascar Penguins.

You need:

Hot dog buns 
Cheese Slices (Yellow and White)
Pretzel Sticks
Cream Cheese
Optional: Goldfish Crackers or Character Fruit Snacks

To make:

Hollow out the center of 1/2 of  bun.
Spoon in cream cheese.
Cut cheese slices diagonally into triangles.
Slide pretzel thru one side of slice to form a sail. 
Note: This doesn't work well with room temperature cheese, so we used cream cheese as a paste. Stick sail into the cream cheese. Use mini pretzels for steering wheel and life preservers. Insert Goldfish crackers tail end first to represent passengers. Serve with baked chips and pumpkin salsa. Eat.

How to Make Clay: Air Dry Clay, Homemade Clay Recipes for Home School Art Project

How to make clay is simple: Here are some recipes.

We've been crafting with Air-Dry clay. We purchased a clay kit and then we also made our own clay at home. It can be used with a Potter's wheel or shaped into free forms for home school art projects. Enjoy!

Attach pieces by adding a little water to each piece. This is Jake's Pig (From Jake's Journey in Art). He enjoyed playing with the clay just enough to complete the assignment.

Clay is wonderful for Sensory play. In the homemade recipe below, just add some scented oils like vanilla or cinnamon.  TOUCH, SMELL, TASTE (I don't recommend it), SEE- hmm... When it dries you can gently tap it onto the table for SOUND encompassing all senses or get CREATIVE and make a rattle/maraca or a base for a drum just stretch tissue paper over the top and attach with a large rubber band.

How to make Homemade Clay Recipe:

Easy/recommended for preschool and early elementary

1 cup flour
1 cup water
2 tsp cream of tartar
 ¼ cup salt
1 tbsp vegetable oil
food coloring (optional)

Combine all ingredients in a medium-sized pot. Decide on a color  for the clay. Cook over moderate heat, stirring constantly. The dough will eventually become difficult to stir, and it will stick to the spoon. At this point, dump the dough onto wax paper. Allow it to cool for at least 15 minutes, and then knead it until it is smooth. Store the dough in a plastic container or a plastic bag when not in use. Refrigerate the clay when not in use.

Homemade Clay can be painted and it will last for years to come. Make cute Holiday Gifts: Think napkin rings, 3D wall hangings, necklace medallions, trivets, and pretty catch-all bowls.

Crafts for Kids with Old, Antique, or Decorative Bottles

Make crafts with Old, Decorative Glass Bottles

So, I've been saving this old container of dirty, antique bottles to do some bottle crafts for kids. I dug them up on an abandoned property where an old cabin had once sat.  More recently, it had been an abandoned dump. It was a treasure trove of trash.

I found old crocks and a 1925 or 1928, Christmas edition, Coca-Cola bottle worth absolutely nothing! It was cracked. There was a mint-condition, amber, Clorox bottle, once worth around $40, until we moved and let our craziest driver friend pull the trailer (which I had poorly packed) and an awesome yellow bottle that had melted in the most beautiful Salvador Dali fashion (beauty is in the eye of the beholder)! I'm not a purist; I like to mix them in with my reproductions and other decorative, cheap, glass bottles.

What can you do with old bottles? My mother painted this beautiful, decorative bottle and gave it to me as a gift. It came filled with real Vanilla Beans and Vodka. Here's the Recipe for Home-made Vanilla Extract.  It came complete with a 'Do not open until' tag, and a cork, of course. Yum!

We also had a craft-fail extraordinaire. I decided to put a bow on it and call it precious. Rock salt and glue are supposed to make a crystal coating for a candle votive. Um, no- not for us.

You don't have to dig in a dump for your jars. I found some very nice amber glass jars and bottles. I'd love to hear from you. Leave a comment and share your creative glass projects with us.

TIP: Those dirty, old bottles went from trash to treasure when I squirted in a little hand-sanitizer, a sprinkle of salt, and about an inch of hot water. It worked like magic ~ just slosh! I had tried to clean them before, but this bottle cleaning recipe made them sparkle.

Enjoy a salsa demonstration and a screening of the new documentary film about kids, food, and  politics,  "What's on Your Plate."

The film carries a message much like Chipotle's vision for 'Food With Integrity,' which it works to share with children all over the country through a variety of educational programs. The August screening promises to be a fun and educational summer activity for families with children of all ages. Salsa demonstration begins at 6:30pm followed by the movie screening at 7pm.

Mock Baked Alaska Cake Recipe with optional fillings.

How to Make Baked Alaska Cake 

• 1 package (18.25 oz) Devil's Food or Chocolate cake mix (plus ingredients to make cake)

• 1 cup mini semi-sweet Chocolate Chips, divided

• 1 package (8 oz) Neufachtel Cheese or Cream Cheese, softened

• 1 cup powdered sugar

• 1 container (16 oz) frozen whipped topping, thawed, divided.

Directions: 
Preheat oven to 325° F. Grease and flour Classic Batter Bowl.

Prepare cake mix according to package directions; pour into batter bowl. Bake 1 hour, 10 minutes to 1 hour, 15 minutes or until cake tester inserted in center comes out clean. 

Remove from oven to cooling rack; cool 15 minutes. Run spatula around outside of cake and gently turn out onto cooling rack, large end down.

Cool 3 hours. Using serrated bread knife, trim large end of cake to level. Place cake, large end down, onto cake plate. 

To slice cake into four equal layers, slice cake horizontally in half. Then, slice each half into two equal layers.

Chop 1/4 cup of the chocolate morsels using food chopper; set aside.  

Place remaining chocolate morsels in microwave, uncovered, on high 20-60 seconds or until melted and smooth, stirring after each 20-second interval. 

In clean Batter Bowl, whisk cream cheese until smooth using stainless steel whisk. Add powdered sugar; whisk until smooth. 

Stir in melted chocolate; mix well. Fold 2 cups of the whipped topping and chopped chocolate into cream cheese mixture using spatula. 

Using spreader or butter knife, spread bottom layer of cake with about half of the filling, forming a 3/4-inch layer.

Repeat with remaining layers and filling, ending with the top layer of cake. Spread any remaining filling over outside of cake to create a smooth surface. 

Frost cake with remaining whipped topping.

*To form decorative peaks, press spreader into topping and pull away. Repeat over entire surface of cake. For easier slicing, refrigerate cake at least 30 minutes.  

To easily cut cake into servings, cut cake into eight wedges from top to bottom using utility knife. 

Carefully insert spatula horizontally into each wedge, dividing into two equal portions. 

Options for Filling:

Red Kool-Aid Strawberry Splash: Omit chocolate morsels. Add 1/2 teaspoon unsweetened strawberry drink mix powder to cream cheese mixture. Stir 1/4 cup chopped strawberries into cream cheese mixture. Proceed as recipe directs. Use strawberry flavored whip cream or regular with red food coloring.

Christmas Green Mint Splash: Omit 1/2 cup melted chocolate. Add 1/4 teaspoon peppermint extract and 3-4 drops green food coloring, if desired, to cream cheese mixture. Proceed as recipe directs.

Sensory Activities: Edible Straw Painting for Toddlers ~ Yum!

Edible Painting with Straws is Fun, Sensory Activity for Toddlers

Toddlers love to play with straws. One of the first milestones is learning to drink out of a straw. Blowing through a straw if also a fun, sensory experience for toddlers. This activity uses both. It is fun to watch them practice. Grab a cottonball to teach them to blow through the straw and then mix up some edible paint to make these cool, colorful blot pictures.

Our paint isn't just edible; it is yummy too!

Neon food color, maple syrup, milk, and cornstarch. Mix in three equal parts syrup, milk, and starch. Add one or two drops of color.

Little ones learn to blow thru the straw vs. sucking ~ not as easy as it seems.

It makes great finger-paint too.
