Sand Art Bottle Craft No Sand Colored Rice

How to Make Sand Art in a Bottle without Sand

We wanted to make sand art in a bottle, but we didn't have any colored sand. Also, we like to make our crafts edible whenever possible so that toddlers and preschoolers can participate without getting sick. Isn't this lovely? Just what does one do with such a beautiful piece of art? We put it in our kitchen window.

To get started you will need:

White Rice, Salt, Baggies, and Food Coloring

How to color rice.
Coloring Rice.
To make sand art with rice:

Place dry rice in a Ziploc bag.
Squeeze in 3-4 drops of food coloring.
We used NEON colors.
Add some rice and a little salt to brighten the color.
Shake, then use hands to mix any rice that doesn't take color right away.

Purple colored rice.
Knead the rice to mix in the color.
Now you are ready to create beautiful sand-art designs with rice. Grab a funnel and have fun. Want to make an intricate pattern? Use the end of a paint brush to tap rice down. You can make flowers easily. Give it a try and show us your skill in the comment section, "Tell us your two cents" below.

We used Play-doh as a cork. Make a little ball and tap it in with a finger.
Leftover, colored salt crystals.
"Hey, Mommy is food coloring edible?  Wait, I know it is because it says food.  Can I have some?"

"I love salt!  Rice, not so much."

Crafts for Kids with Old, Antique, or Decorative Bottles

Make crafts with Old, Decorative Glass Bottles

So, I've been saving this old container of dirty, antique bottles to do some bottle crafts for kids. I dug them up on an abandoned property where an old cabin had once sat.  More recently, it had been an abandoned dump. It was a treasure trove of trash.

Old, antique amber and cobalt decorative bottles.
Old, antique amber and cobalt decorative bottles.

I found old crocks and a 1925 or 1928, Christmas edition, Coca-Cola bottle worth absolutely nothing! It was cracked. There was a mint-condition, amber, Clorox bottle, once worth around $40, until we moved and let our craziest driver friend pull the trailer (which I had poorly packed) and an awesome yellow bottle that had melted in the most beautiful Salvador Dali fashion (beauty is in the eye of the beholder)! I'm not a purist; I like to mix them in with my reproductions and other decorative, cheap, glass bottles.

Old medicine, ketchup, and syrup bottles.

What can you do with old bottles? My mother painted this beautiful, decorative bottle and gave it to me as a gift. It came filled with real Vanilla Beans and Vodka. Here's the Recipe for Home-made Vanilla Extract.  It came complete with a 'Do not open until' tag, and a cork, of course. Yum!

My daughter and I made some traditional colored rice in bottles.

We also had a craft-fail extraordinaire. I decided to put a bow on it and call it precious. Rock salt and glue are supposed to make a crystal coating for a candle votive. Um, no- not for us.

Rock salt and blue decorative bottle craft fail.
You don't have to dig in a dump for your jars. I found some very nice amber glass jars and bottles. I'd love to hear from you. Leave a comment and share your creative glass projects with us.

TIP: Those dirty, old bottles went from trash to treasure when I squirted in a little hand-sanitizer, a sprinkle of salt, and about an inch of hot water. It worked like magic ~ just slosh! I had tried to clean them before, but this bottle cleaning recipe made them sparkle.

Styrofoam Cup Snowman: This Classroom Door snowman was designed for a door decorating contest. Yes, he won! But, the question is...

How do you make a snowman for a classroom door from Styrofoam cups

The serious answer is very, very carefully with lots of patience. Plastic Cups are easier to staple than Styrofoam cups. They also have more give when assembling the snowman. Try using sticky Velcro strips to attach your snowman creation to the door, wall, or classroom bulletin board.

This one was created by Destinie S. and uploaded to Pinterest.
Click Plastic Cup Snowman with lights to see the video with flashing lights. Great job!

Good news! We found a video that shows how to make balls from plastic cups. In the video, you'll see that they make two halves and attach them to form a ball. So, you'll only need to make one half and then attach it to the wall. However, if you make the entire ball , you can make a stand alone cup snowman decoration. Check out this cute one, made to look like Olaf from Frozen!

How to Make a Snowman from Plastic or Styrofoam Cups:

Watch the video above to learn how to make a classroom door snowman from plastic cups. In the video, it shows how to make balls to make light decorations for parties. You can adapt this method to create the snowballs to build your snowman on a door.

Get short Styrofoam cups like the plastic cups in the picture.

FYI: We tried making the Styrofoam cup snowman several times. We finally made something resembling a circle, but never felt it was a good enough snowball to share. However, we tried it with tiny medicine cups which were difficult to staple. And then, we tried using glue to attach Styrofoam cups together. The method in the video with regular size plastic cups stapled together seems to work, but the circles are difficult to get perfectly round.

Good luck, you're going to need it!

Ways to Recycle Plastic Bottles

Here are 10 reasons to hate juice packs:

1.  Straw wrappers. Everywhere.
2.  "Mommy, I can't get a straw in here!" (But they want to, try really hard, and squeeze juice everywhere.)
3.  Little dots of juice turned dirt magnets on the carpet. Everywhere.

5.  Pouches in landfills. Everywhere.
6.  Half-full pouch tossed in trash because kids too lazy too squeeze out last drop.
7.  "I don't like Kiwi Strawberry." "I don't like lemonade." "Wah!" (Complaints)
8.  "Look, it's a volcano!" Everywhere.
9.  Added sugar.
10. Instant Balloon toys, need I say more?

Solution:
Recycle mini-soda bottles, fill with healthy drinks of your choice or even Kool-aid. Saves money, the environment, and Mommy headaches.
