Looking for Low Carb Bread Items for the Diabetic in your Family?

Where can you buy bread for diabetics?

We struggle to find low carb bread items for those cravings. My Diabetic won't eat "dirty bread", and it is a good thing. Those wheat breads they sell in the grocery store have 70 calories and 15 grams of carbs per slice vs. the classic white version with 70 calories and  13 grams of carbs.  2 grams difference? At least my kids buy it when I tell them it tastes the same, but it has more sodium! I'm not sure what the point is besides just another way to confuse consumers. I do like those nutty, grain wheat breads, but I can't sell it to anyone else in the family!

I just stumbled upon a Low Carb Grocery store based in Canada. (They have good shipping rates to the U.S.) They have tons of items and list the nutritional information on the site. There are several varieties of whole wheat Pita breads and I came across a low carb pita bread I think will pass the test.

I've been replacing sandwich bread with pitas. I just load everything in, wrap it up and for added yum value toast it in a skillet for about 45 seconds on each side. After 9 years, I have finally convinced my diabetic that sandwich bread is the issue. We've been tracking his sugar level and while it still isn't in range it has dropped hundreds of points (yes, I mean hundreds). Bread is our biggest battle. What are your hurdles?

I found flavorings and syrups on the site too, I'm going to give those a go. Maybe, by this time next year he'll be in the 70-120 range. Last year, his normal levels were over 500 with medication. This year, he is staying around 200-500 with insulin. Here is an article regarding healthy levels. Good luck with your battles. We still have a lot of work to do.

Kitchen Kids: New Year's Day Bagel Breakfast Recipe Pre School Snack

This easy, edible craft is perfect for preschool birthday parties or as a New Year fun snack for preschoolers

The Bagel Breakfast is a somewhat healthy alternative to the cupcake with bagels, cream cheese, banana, and pineapple.

New Year's Eve ~ Bagel Surprise Treat for Kids.

You need:

Bagels
Bananas
Can of Pineapple
Strawberries
Cream Cheese


To make:

Toast bagel.
Spread Cream Cheese onto one bagel half.
Place Pineapple ring on top of cream cheese.
Cut Banana in half and insert in center of bagel/pineapple.
(Add a dab of cream cheese banana's base to help it stand on end.)
Slice Strawberry and insert the slice around banana.

Now you have a candle in a votive cup.

Cinnamon Christmas Cobbler Recipe for Christmas Morning: Kitchen Kids

Get Cooking with your Kids with this Christmas Cobbler

This Cinnamon Christmas Cobbler is a fun, easy recipe you can make at home or in the classroom with preschoolers. Made with refrigerator biscuits and pie filling, you won't believe how delicious it is. Enjoy!

Cinnamon Christmas Cobbler Recipe.

This recipe is so simple. The biscuits are good with only the Cinnamon mixture, but add the pie filling and it tastes like real cobbler- maybe better!

Cinnamon Christmas Cobbler Recipe.

You will need:

1 roll of refrigerator biscuits
2 tablespoons of butter
2 tablespoons of sugar
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon red sprinkles
1 can cherry or strawberry pie filling

To Make Biscuit Cinnamon Cobbler:

Preheat oven to 375 degrees.

Separate biscuits and place on ungreased baking sheet or place them in a muffin pan.

Arrange biscuits in a baking pan.

Brush melted butter over biscuits.

Melt butter and brush over biscuits.

Cinnamon, sugar, and red sprinkles.

Mix Sprinkles, Cinnamon, and Sugar, then sprinkle on biscuits.
Bake in oven for 12-15 minutes.

Place biscuits in the oven.

Heat pie filling in sauce pan over low heat until warm.

Biscuit out of the oven tastes like a Cinnamon Roll.

Place biscuit in dessert dish, spoon filling over biscuit, top with whip cream.

Biscuit with strawberry pie filling- just add whip cream.

Makes 8 servings, perfect for Christmas morning.

'Twas the Night Before Christmas in Our House...

The Night Before Christmas Poem: At Our House

We wish you a Merry Christmas! Hope you all have a Christmas Eve filled with warm memories and  stockings full of happiness. Here are a few photos from around our new house (old farm houseand a poem about our night before Christmas. 

We'll celebrate with a Christmas Eve children's service and then our older children and close family friends will stop by on the eve of Jesus birth for a gift exchange. Christmas day, we'll make the trek over the river and through the woods to Grandma's house. Enjoy!

'Twas the night before Christmas when all through the house,
every creature was stirring except for the mouse.

The stockings drooped from the piano with flair,
hanging onto their reindeer hooks with special care.

I knew in an instant it must be St. Nick.

More rapid ranting than Mommy's his reprimands came
And he pointed and shouted and called us by name.

Now Jake, now Mayhem, now Tigger please listen...

Why aren't you sleeping? Are those bumps on your head? March up those stairs and climb into your warm beds.

So, up to our bedrooms sister and I flew
with thoughts of toys and fears of Santa too.

And then in a twinkling, I heard on the wall
the kneading and pawing of each little claw.

As, I covered my eyes listening to the sound
up the stairs my bad kitty lept with a bound.

Santa cleared his throat and his belly it rumbled
He tripped on the cat and on the floor he tumbled.

The bundle of toys he had flung on his back
flew out onto the floor emptying his red sack

nuck out to spy on old Mr. Kringle
His cheeks were flushed and his smile had lost its jingle

He surveyed the damage and gritted his teeth
And the cat, it encircled his feet like a wreath.

Santa Bunny got covered in snow.
Hey, at least it's not a duck.

Covering my face and trying not to laugh
I saw St. Nicholas twitch his nose at my cat.

He flew up landing next to the Elf on the Shelf.
And I laughed when I saw it inspite of myself.

A wink of his eye and a twist of his head
Soon led me to know I had nothing to dread.

He spoke not a word but went straight to his work
collecting the toys then he turned with a jerk.

And laying his hand under the kitty's back
he scooped it up giving its head a light pat.

Shaking from side to side he gave a little laugh
And said, "Listen naughty cat, it's time you had a bath.

Instead of punishment, he handed me the cat
At least without our cookies he's a little less fat.

Grandma recovered from her reindeer incident.

And I heard him exclaim as he disappeared from sight,
Merry Christmas to all and to me...

How to Build a Cave Model Diorama from a Cardboard Shoebox and Construction Paper

Here's a Homeschool Science Project on Stalactites and Stalagmites. Make your own cave for a science fair diorama project. Make sure everything is labeled clearly. This was made for a third grade science project for a gifted class, but it is suitable for grades 3-8. Enjoy!

Learning about spelunking and cave exploration by building a cave diorama project.

Great model, eh? How is this not art? Jake had a fabulous time designing and crafting this model of a cave for his Homeschool Science portfolio. He enjoyed researching each term, but refused to write them out in a report form. He labeled each item and taped down a descriptive tag, but did not do a report. He despises the art form of handwriting (we are working on this too).

The cave words were particularly intriguing with speleothems (cave formations) and speleologists (scientist who explore caves) ranking at the top of his interest list. All of the spelunking terms are fun to say!

To make a shoebox model diorama like this one you will need:

• shoe box or cereal box with the face cut off
• construction paper
• scissors
• tape and glue
• action figures

First, cover the inside of your cardboard box with an appropriate color of paper. Then, cut out cave formations (stalactites and stalagmites) leaving a little extra on the base. Fold this extra down like a flap, and glue or tape it to the top or bottom of your diorama. This makes it stay erect and sturdy.

Research the definition of various cave terms. Type these into a word program leaving several spaces between definitions, so they can be cut out for labels. Attach with tape or glue. This information should also be written into a companion report for your project to work toward an 'A' grade.

In Jake's model you can see the Cave Bacon which is a stalactite hanging from the "ceiling" of the cave. It looks like bacon with the side stripes of color. Cave Eggs cover the floor or ground as Stalagmites. These are round formations with circular rings of pattern. Cave Cauliflower and Soda Straws are pictured above, but you need something to research on your own, so get busy!

How can you remember which is which? Easy! Use this simple memory trick.

Make Your Own Storybook Block Puzzle: Recycle, Repurpose, Reuse_Little Golden Books

Learn How to Make a Storybook Puzzle from Old Blocks

In this addition of, Things to Make at Home, we recycle children's books. Your kids' story books can grow up with them. Use those old foam baby blocks and worn out Little Golden Books to make a fun puzzle for the kids. The pages trim to fit a 3x3 block pattern. Enjoy!

Use glue to adhere the pages to the aligned blocks.
Let dry completely- up to an hour.
Trust me, patience is not only a virtue but a requirement.
If you don't wait for it to dry, it will turn into a disaster.

When the first page is dry, take an Exact-o knife and cut through the block seams.

Cutting through the paper.

Once row is separated flip it, and align again.

Repeat until all side are covered. 
Don't worry if the paper edges aren't even.

Trim the paper edges after each paste.

Completed Story Block.

Blocks are ready to Modge Podge, let set, and play!

Some blocks stuck to the board and ripped, but this is easily repaired in the final step with the Modge Podge. Even if some of the image is removed, it still makes a nice picture. If you're stuck on perfection you can take an extra step and cut the squares out before pasting to the blocks. If you cut them out individually, make them slightly smaller than the face of the block. This leaves a nice outline around each image and gives the puzzle a more professional feel when complete.
