Our Life as a Big Blended Family   

Every parent knows that raising a family of any size and structure is a challenge. Every child has their own personality and the bigger the family,the more of a Master Schedule/Juggler you become.Then there are mixed families; couples that marry, or remarry, partners that have children from a previous marriage or relationship. This is the case for our family. In fact, in our case, things are even a little more complicated.


When I was introduced to my (now) husband, Mark, I had two young children, a five year-old son, Garrett, from a previous relationship (one of those short-lived “what was I thinking” relationships that change the course of everything), and a three year-old daughter, Ainsley, from a previous marriage.


Mark also had two children of his own, eight year-old daughter, Emma, and six year-old son, Alex, both from a previous marriage. Almost six years later, we now have a four year-old daughter, Olivia, and one more on the way, due in late September.


As you can imagine, schedules often overlap and clash and it is just something we have to work through. Sometimes it is asking for help from one of the kids other parents, sometimes it is Mark leaving work early to help, and sometimes we just have to let something slip through the cracks, which is always a disappointment but sometimes just needs to be done.

Healthy Kid-friendly Strawberry Smoothie Recipe.

To Make a Strawberry Smoothie at Home you will need:

Fresh or Frozen Strawberries and Raspberries

Crushed Ice (We tweaked the recipe.)

Plain or Vanilla Yogurt.

Whip Topping (Added that too...)

So good, kids will love to drink smoothies.

Fun Try It:

We also made a Smoothie with Frozen Virgin Strawberry Daiquiri Mixer, Frozen Strawberries, and Vanilla Yogurt. Tastes great, but the Mixer is sweetened with High Fructose Corn Syrup. Grown-ups can add the rum for a little extra kick. :)

Easy Activity to Celebrate Earth Day with Preschoolers

As a little girl, trips to McDonald's were rare. Today, it seems to be a staple in the little's diet. I wonder if they will remember their favorite Happy Meal prizes as I do.

Once upon a time, Mickey D's gave out tiny little peat pots and sunflower seeds; the gift that kept on giving. My Dad and I went home, planted those seeds, and later transplanted them into our backyard garden. For years, we had a row of giant sunflowers. I even entered them in a 4-H contest. Sweet memories... you can make yourself. Enjoy!

Just add soil, water, sunlight, and love.

This is a great project to pair with our Daisy-Head Mayzie Activities.

Microwave Strawberry Cheesecake Cake Recipe

Strawberry Cheesecake Recipe for Mircowave 

Angie's Corner: What could be better than a cake recipe you can microwave? Yes, please. This Strawberry Cheesecake CAKE recipe is microwavable. Enjoy!

Microwave Strawberry Cheesecake 'Cake' Recipe.

Strawberry Cheesecake Microwave Cake Recipe

Ingredients:

1 strawberry cake mix (if you can't find strawberry- Pillsbury and Betty Crocker makes one you can use white, add red food color, (not much, like one drop) and add an extract tsp of strawberry extract.

The strawberry cake mix is prettier it has pink cake with red speckles, plus you're putting in the white chip is very pretty.

1 tsp. strawberry extract (only if you cannot find the strawberry cake mix)
½ cup white chocolate chips
1 (3 oz. box) cheesecake pudding mix
16 oz. sour cream
½ cup oil
3 eggs 

Garnish: whipped topping and fresh Strawberry Fans. 

• 1. Spray your Stoneware Fluted Pan or Deep Covered Baker lightly and dust with flour (works best with Baker's Joy).
• 2. Whisk eggs and pudding mix together in Classic Batter Bowl.
• 3. Add remaining ingredients, blending well with Mix N' Scraper.
• 4. Drop batter into Fluted pan and microwave on high 12-14 minutes. 
• 1. (Watch your cake after 10 minutes if you microwave runs hot.) Works best if your have a turntable in your microwave. If not, rotate every 4-5 minutes. 
• 5. Invert cakes immediately, but leave pan over the cake for 10 minutes. Cool. Garnish (Flour Sugar Shaker filled with powdered sugar, fresh strawberry fans made with your Egg Slicer Plus or Paring knife, fresh mints snipped with your Kitchen Shears) as desired.

How to Make Strawberry Fans:

To make the Strawberry fans gently slice a 3/4 of the way down and fan apart. Then with any leftover strawberries, put them in the Manual Food Processor and chop til desired sized and put in the center of cake, If using the fluted pan fill hole in center of cake first with leftover whipped topping before adding the strawberries.

Sensory Activities: Edible Straw Painting for Toddlers ~ Yum!

Edible Painting with Straws is Fun, Sensory Activity for Toddlers

Toddlers love to play with straws. One of the first milestones is learning to drink out of a straw. Blowing through a straw if also a fun, sensory experience for toddlers. This activity uses both. It is fun to watch them practice. Grab a cottonball to teach them to blow through the straw and then mix up some edible paint to make these cool, colorful blot pictures.

Our paint isn't just edible; it is yummy too!

Neon food color, maple syrup, milk, and cornstarch. Mix in three equal parts syrup, milk, and starch. Add one or two drops of color.

Little ones learn to blow thru the straw vs. sucking ~ not as easy as it seems.

It makes great finger-paint too.

A Day In Kokomo at the Glass Factory

Things to do In Indiana: Kokomo,  A One Tank Trip

We visited the Indiana Glass Factory in Kokomo, Indiana. If you're looking for things to do in Indiana, this is a great idea for a field trip or a one tank trip in Indiana. Homeschoolers will enjoy learning a new skill for a possible future trade or art project.

We got a guided tour of the glass factory. The kids saw it featured on a local news channel over Christmas break and really wanted to go. We all learned many things and we were all surprised to find out where the glass has been placed. One place is the Cinderella Castle at Disney. Apparently, the Kokomo Glass Factory produced all of the glass in the castle.

The Kokomo Glass Factory has a beautiful shop where you can purchase hand blown hand blown glass items. Visit KOG.COM to see the shop (they ship) and if you live in the Indiana area, stop by and take  the tour. The Indiana Glass Factory makes a great family outing or field trip idea. 

Currently it runs Tues-Fri at 10 am and lasts about an hour. They even offer a class to make glass beads and accents. They also sell glass panes of different sizes and thicknesses if you need some for your home or craft projects.

This is truly a hidden jewel in Indiana.  We never knew about the glass factory until we saw it on the news. The kids loved the tour (which was a surprise) and apparently it was the highlight of everything we had planned over break.
